The sixth chapter of Eating Animals was extremely shocking,
revealing, and disturbing. The moment
that had the greatest impact on me what when the poor and cruel treatment of
the animals was described. Foer used
direct facts that made his argument seem more valid and believable. It would have been nice for there to have been
some charts as a visual, but the facts still stood out in my mind. One disturbing fact was about the amount of
manure that is left behind and what is done with it. Foer stated that, Pig farms produce 7.2
million pounds of pig manure, 344 pounds of manure for cows, and 6.6 million
pounds for chickens. The waste is later
dumped into lagoons that can cause quick sand! This is not only extremely
disgusting but dangerous. More with the
treatment of animals is the fact that chickens are basically being stuck in
boxes where their movement is not possible, and they are just left in these
cages. There is so much more that could
be done for fair treatment of animals. I
did not know these terrible things occurred and for the first time while reading
this book I actually became angry and upset.
Why do we abuse animals when it is not necessary?
