I thought that Hannah’s group about
abortion did a really good job bringing in pathos, logos, and ethos. Abortion
is a very touchy subject for most people, and the way they expressed their
views through personal stories really touched on the audience’s pathos. Dani’s
character told a story about how her mother had contemplated aborting her, but
was talked out of it, and that’s why she is still here today. That is a very
good example of getting your viewers to agree with you when such a sensitive
story like that is brought up. Ryan’s character also mentioned how his friend
was raped and became pregnant, and she decided on getting an abortion so she
would not have constantly deal with connected to her rapist through their
child. This was also a very good example of pathos and really played on the
audience’s emotion. This also was a very good way of touching on ethos, since
their personal experience gave them a first hand view to whether or not they
support abortions. As a country, we do not value rape, so it is a good story to
sway the viewers in the opposite direction and get them to support you. During
their speech they also gave many statistics about rape and how many potential
children there could have been if abortion was not an option for women, and
when you take that into consideration it could change your mind if you imagine
having 55 million more people on Earth.
