The three books we read this semester were all on three
totally different topics but all three of the books had different meanings that
we were supposed to take away. By the end of all three of the books I believe
that the authors wanted their readers to have their “eyes opened” to what is
actually going on or what has happened in the past. For example by the end of
Eating Animals the author obviously wanted his readers to all change over to
being vegetarian but he also wants our society to see what is actually going on
in the food industry. With the Shallows Carr wanted to open our eyes to how the
Internet is changing our society and affecting our brains in a negative way.
Lastly with Maus Spiegelman wanted to inform everyone on how terrible the
Holocaust was. With all three of the books the authors tried to connect with us
and in a way make it personal so it would really process with us and have it be
something that we would remember. In eating Animals Foer would get very
descriptive and paint a picture in our heads trying to make us disgusted with
the fact of what was actually going on. In the Shallows Carr gave us lots of
information to prove his statements showing how our brains are being affected.
Lastly with Maus Spiegelman used his pictures more to convey his message and we
had to analyze those to find out the deeper meaning of what was going on.
